I’m gonna be honest, I don’t like the Far Traveler background. The Far Traveler background comes from the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. This plays well into the idea that a Druid character may come from a foreign land with reverence for the natural world. Far Traveler ( SCAG)įar Traveler highlights the idea that your character comes from a distant land. So, Outlander makes for a great background choice for Druids if you don’t want the more intellectual elements to come into play. ![]() Personally, I like the idea of a Druid Outlander being sort of like a tribal healer or guide through a magical forest. It basically means your party never gets lost when you’re in familiar territory and you can find food and water anywhere that has berries, fruit, and other edible items. Wanderer is a fantastic background feature. That said, it does make for one of the better options. This makes it one of the best backgrounds for Barbarians, but it doesn’t highlight the mystical aspect that Druids embody. Outlander is more of a physical background as evidenced by the skill proficiencies of Athletics and Survival. Be that seeking enlightenment or searching for some long lost secret, their existence should indicate something more than just survival. Since Druids are casters (specifically, Wisdom caster), they should have a bit more of a focus on some sort of mental pursuit. This is why I think Outlander makes for the second best background for Druids. Instead, Outlanders focus on the survival aspects of living in the wilds. The difference being your character isn’t really the intellectual type. Like the Hermit, this background focuses on how your character grew up and lives/lived away from civilization. Next up, what is arguably the best background for a Druid (second only to Hermit) is Outlander. Since the theme draws inspiration from living and surviving with a clan outside of "civilized" society alongside nature, it works perfectly with the Druid class. The Outlander background is a great choice for Druids. But, that’s just me.Īs a whole, the biggest reason why Hermit is the best background for Druids is simply because it aligns with the overall theme very well. …But honestly, I think Religion is a strange choice for Hermits. Medicine and Religion offer a couple good role-playing options as your character understands how to keep something alive and knowledge about the greater beings of existence. The skill proficiencies play fairly well for Druids too. ![]() ![]() Be that ancient ruins, a scroll containing a secret of the multiverse, or simply the location of a lost civilization, a Hermits discovery is a major boon for DMs to work your character into the game. The Discovery background feature Hermits get pretty much gives you insight to some enigmatic, obscure, or occult…thing. Even better, it comes with a neat feature that you can use to play into the overall plot of your game. Since the theming inspiring the Druid class revolves around living with nature, the Hermit fits perfectly. They’ve had little to no interaction with the "civilized" world, instead opting to live in and with the natural world.Īlready, this makes the Hermit background the best choice for Druids. It fits the theme of most Druid characters extremely well.īasically, as a Hermit, your character lives or lived in isolation for a large portion of their life. But, this makes it one of the best choices. Hermit is probably the most classic background choice for Druids. Let’s take a closer look at each of the best Druid backgrounds in D&D 5e.
